Description
VERY old cast brass rim lock from 1854.This design served the ship industry well for two reasons: no door mortise needed to be created and an all brass body and handle served well with the salty environment they were exposed to.
This one is a brass ship lock dated 1854. Manufacturer unknown, but I suspect it could have been YALE, SARGENT or Russell & Erwin (aka RUSSWINN in modern times).
Strike plate (brass) is 9 1/4" x 1 1/4" x 1/8" thick. Case size is 4 1/2" x 6" x 1" thick.
The pictures for vintage catalogs are dated the very early 1900's.
When I bought this lock some time ago, it was mounted to a very thick wood board. Little did I know that on the wood side of the lock was an inscription.
It reads:
1854 Vallejo, Calif. This lock was originally on a warehouse door built 1854 Mare Island Naval Ship yard. Replaced 1955 by S.E. Thomas
No key, but the mechanism is very simple.
I include all mounting hardware (brass, of course). The strike plate (brass of course) is not the correct one, but is large enough to be modified for the job. Temporary strike plate.
Referred to in the beginnings of the lock industr
y, rim (surface) locks were quite common as the door did not need to be modified to accept and internal mechanism. Rim locks were surface mounted to the door. You will see early applications of these locks in vintage westerns. Look closely.
