This trio of U.S. Special Forces soldiers are ‘armed and very dangerous’! The ‘Team Leader’ moves cautiously forward carrying an M16A2 Assault Rifle, an updated and upgraded version of the standard U.S. Army M16A1, usually only distributed to Special Forces. He is dressed, in the then new

ERDL Pattern camouflage, which
in early 1967,
was only issued to elite reconnaissance and special operations units. *
ERDL (
Engineer Research & Development Laboratories), was a branch of the U.S. Army that was responsible for, among other things, the development of camouflage uniforms. The kneeling ‘Grenadier’ is loading his M79 Grenade Launcher, backing this up is his personal weapon, a ‘Swedish K’, 9mm submachine gun. Completing the ‘trio’ is the heavy firepower of the crouching M60 machine gunner outfitted with belts of 7.62mm ammunition. He also carries the M1911 Colt Automatic Pistol alongside his ‘K bar’ fighting knife and has placed his backpack in front of him. These last two Special Forces troopers are also wearing the newly-introduced ‘ERDL Camo’ suits.

GOOD MORNING VIETNAM... AGAIN
!"
U.S. SPECIAL FORCES DURING THE VIETNAM WAR
VIETNAM was the setting for one of the U.S. Special Forces most complex and controversial missions. Beginning in the late 1950’s small Special Forces detachments were deployed throughout the South and several neighboring countries to undertake the defense of indigenous tribes in the most difficult areas and help them form self-defense units and fortify villages & hamlets against communist insurgents.
Among their other duties were to improve the general health and living conditions of the local people while still gathering intelligence and other information about the movements and locations of any enemy, particularly the
Viet Cong
groups operating in or passing through those parts of the country.
As well as these more ‘
passive
’ tasks, Special Forces teams also played a more aggressive role… laying ambushes… planting mines and booby traps along enemy trails… and capturing and interrogating enemy prisoners.
The men who volunteered for ‘
Special Forces
’ were also a very different breed of soldier… strong, independent, flexible in mind and body, and capable of operating in the harshest of conditions and often the worst of situations.
These new figures represent a small team of SF about to go into action and are part of King & Country’s and Picacho Peak Collectibles tribute to some very exceptional and brave soldiers…

HISTORICAL NOTE
:
'TET' OFFENSIVE and THE BATTLE OF HUE... 1968
BATTLE OF HUE 1968 - VIETNAM WAR
Huế
- the ancient imperial capital city of Vietnam - was a hundred kilometers south of the DMZ. It had a population of nearly 140,000, making it the third largest city in the Republic of South Vietnam. The Citadel, or Imperial City, is the walled in portion of Huế sitting on the north bank of the Perfume River.
The Battle of Huế - also called the Siege of Huế - was one of the bloodiest and longest battles of the Vietnam War. Between 30 January and 3 March, 1968, in the South Vietnamese city of Huế, 11 battalions of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN), four U.S. Army battalions, and three U.S. Marine Corps battalions - totaling 18 battalions – engaged and defeated 10 battalions of the People’s Army of Vietnam (PAVN) and the Vietcong (VC).
By the beginning of the North Vietnamese 'Tet' Offensive on 30 January 1968, large, conventional, U.S. forces had already been committed to combat operations on Vietnamese soil for almost three years.
In 1968, the city of
Huế
, was an important supply and logistics center for
U.S.,
ARVN (Army of the Republic of South Vietnam) and other Allied Forces from the coastal city of Da Nangto the Vietnamese Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). Huế was also a base for United States Navy supply boats.
The city was also one of the primary targets of the joint NVA/VC offensive,
which coincided with the Vietnamese Lunar New Year.
Within hours of launching the attack on
Huế
the Vietcong and the PAVN launched the Tet Offensive, by simultaneously attacking hundreds of military targets and population centers across the country… including Huế. T
he PAVN and Vietcong forces rapidly occupied most of the city... only two small military compounds remained unoccupied.
Over the next month,
during intense house-to-house fighting,
the U.S. Marines and ARVN forces gradually drove the enemy out of
Huế.
In the end, although the Allies declared a military victory, the city of Huế was virtually destroyed and more than 5,000 civilians were killed (2,800 of them executed by the PAVN and Vietcong, according to the South Vietnamese government). The communist forces lost an estimated 2,400 to 8,000 killed, while Allied forces lost 668 dead and 3,707 wounded. The losses negatively affected the American public's perception of the war, and political support for the war began to wane.

U.S. SPECIAL FORCES DURING THE VIETNAM WAR
U.S. SPECIAL FORCES MACV-SOG IN SOUTHEAST ASIA 1950 - 1972
The all-volunteer MACV-SOG (most were U.S. Army Special Forces “Green Berets”) carried out some of the most dangerous and challenging special operations of the Vietnam War. MACV-SOG made high-altitude, low-opening parachute jumps behind enemy lines, routinely carried out reconnaissance missions along the Ho Chi Minh Trail, penetrated deep into Laos and Cambodia, recovered downed pilots and attempted several POW rescues. Ranging deep in the enemy’s rear, MACV-SOG reconnaissance teams forced Hanoi to divert 40,000 troops, about four divisions, to rear security missions along the Ho Chi Minh Trail. While some infantryman 'in country' during the Vietnam War did not see combat, there were violent combat actions between MACV-SOG team and large numbers of North Vietnamese Army (NVA) troops. The MACV-SOG teams often found themselves fighting their way out of a hornet's nest of angry NVA battalions.
With small reconnaissance teams numbering less than 10 men, MACV-SOG tied down thousands of NVA troops, provided invaluable intelligence information to the Pentagon, rescued downed pilots and destroyed large amounts of enemy materiel while inflicting grievous losses on the NVA. Earning their place in history with daring exploits and exemplary accomplishments, the men of MACV’s Special Operations Group will remain as a memorable unit that fought during the Vietnam War.
As a tribute to their willingness to demonstrate bravery 'above and beyond the call of duty' t
he Medal of Honor was awarded to nine MACV-SOG men, including Lieutenant Tom Morris, a sea-air-land forces (SEAL) officer, and Lieutenant Loren Hagen, the last U.S. Army member to be awarded the Medal of Honor in Vietnam.
HISTORICAL REFLECTION
:
THE VIETNAM WAR (EXCERPT FROM KEN BURNS HBO SERIES)
America’s involvement in Vietnam began in secrecy. It ended, 30 years later in failure, witnessed by the entire world. It was begun in good faith by decent people out of fateful misunderstandings, American overconfidence, and Cold War miscalculation. And it was prolonged because it seemed easier to muddle through than admit that it had been caused by tragic decisions, made by five American presidents, belonging to both political parties. Before the war was over, more than 58,000 Americans would be dead. At least 250,000 South Vietnamese troops died in the conflict, as well. So did over one million North Vietnamese soldiers and Vietcong guerrillas. Two million civilians, north and south, are thought to have perished, as well as tens of thousands more in the neighboring states of Laos and Cambodia. For many Vietnamese, it was a brutal civil war, for others, the bloody climatic chapter in a century-old struggle for independence. For those Americans who fought in it, and for those who fought against it back home, as well as those who merely glimpsed it on the nightly news, the Vietnam War was a decade of agony, the most divisive period since the American Civil War. Vietnam seemed to call everything into question, the value of honor and gallantry, the qualities of cruelty and mercy, the candor of the American government, and what it means to be a patriot. And those who lived through it have never been able to erase its memory, have never stopped arguing about what really happened, why everything went so badly wrong, who was to blame, and whether it was all worth it.

Note: Although we have never been to either South or North Vietnam, nor any of the battle sites of the Vietnam War, we have visited the stunning U.S.M.C. National Museum of the Marine Corps in Triangle, VA which is near the Marine Corps base in Quantico, VA and of course the stunning Vietnam Wall in Washington D.C. In addition, we have also toured All Five of the Landing Beaches along the Cotentin P
eninsula
and many of the historical locations, and museums in an around Normandy, we have also visited the Bastogne area, including the Baugnez '44 Museum, the site of the Malmedy Massacre, the still existing foxholes of the 502nd and 506th P.I.R. and the pastoral surrounding area in Belgium on several occasions. We have found both the French and the Belgian people, especially in the towns in Normandy and area near Bastogne, to be very friendly and still grateful to the Allies, especially the American forces, for their liberation… despite the huge loss of life and property to the French and Belgian civilians. In addition, should you want to visit the area in and around Normandy or Bastogne, we would be willing to share our experiences or trip itinerary with you, which may help to make your travel through the area easier and perhaps make the historical experience more valuable.
