HISTORICAL NOTE
:
U.S. WILLYS MB OR FORD JEEP
The Willys MB (commonly known as a Jeep, or more formally as the U.S. Army Truck, 1/4 ton, 4x4) and the Ford GPW are four-wheel drive utility vehicles that were manufactured during World War II. Produced from 1941 to 1945, the "Jeep" served on all fronts of the war and in all climates; from the scorching hot deserts of North Africa, the torrential rains of the Japanese held islands in the South Pacific to the brutal winter of 1944-45 during the Battle of the Bulge.
Advances in early 20th-century technology resulted in widespread mechanization of the military during World War I
and b
y the eve of World War II the United States Department of War had determined it needed a light, cross-country reconnaissance vehicle. Anxious to have one in time for America's entry into World War II, the U.S. Army solicited proposals from domestic automobile manufacturers for a replacement for its existing, aging light motor vehicles
.
Initially, only two companies entered: American Bantam Car Company and Willys-Overland Motors; Ford Motor Company competition later. Though Willys-Overland was the low bidder,
Bantam received the bid, being the only company committing to deliver a pilot model in 49 days and production examples in 75
. Under the leadership of designer Karl Probst, Bantam built their first prototype, dubbed the "Blitz Buggy" (and in retrospect "Old Number One"), and delivered it to the Army vehicle test center at Camp Holabird, Maryland on September 23, 1940. This presented Army officials with the first of what eventually evolved into the World War II U.S. Army Jeeps: the Willys MB and Ford GPW. Though Bantam received the original contract, it could not produce the required 75 vehicles per day and the contract was then given to Willys-Overland. By October 1941, it became apparent Willys-Overland also could not keep up with the production demand and Ford was contracted to produce them as well. The Ford car was then designated GPW, with the "W" referring to the "Willys" licensed design. During World War II, Willys produced 363,000 Jeeps and Ford some 280,000. Approximately 51,000 were exported to the U.S.S.R. under the Lend-Lease program. Today, the Willys MB and the Ford GPW remain iconic symbols of America's involvement in WWII.

Not quite as ubiquitous as the Kubelwagen, the Schwimmwagen was still a fairly common sight on German battlefronts on the East and Western Fronts. This new model has the top cover up and has been given a thin coat of whitewash over its original grey exterior. A well-wrapped up driver and a standing Feldgendarme complete the set. - See more at: schwimmwagen-winter-p-1098.html#sthash.YJMI6wwJ.dpuf

Please Note: In addition,
to previously visiting All Five of the Landing Beaches along the Cotentin Peninsula and many of the D-Day historical locations, and museums in and around Normandy, we have also used the same self-guided, GPS supported format on several occasions, including our recent October 2019 trip, to visit the Bastogne area, including the Baugnez '44 Museum (located near the site of the Malmedy Massacre), The December 44 Museum in La Gleize, Muse'e de la Bataille in La Roche-en-Ardenne, The Bastogne War Museum, the still existing foxholes of the 502nd and 506th P.I.R. and the pastoral surrounding area in Belgium. We have found both the French and the Belgian people, especially in the towns in Normandy and the area in and around Bastogne, to be very friendly and still grateful to the Allies, especially the American forces, for their liberation… despite the huge loss of life and property damage suffered by the French and Belgian civilians. In addition, should you plan to visit the area in and around Normandy or Bastogne, we would be willing to share our experiences or trip itinerary with you, which may help to make your travel through the area easier and perhaps make the historical experience more valuable.
